Broadcasting. WHO, an institution in turmoil

May 22, 75e World Health Assembly. As every year, the 194 member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) met there to set the WHO’s budget and policies for the coming months. However, this edition also had another purpose: to elect a new Director General of the UN institution every five years. There is no tension on the agenda this year; former WHO leader Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was the only candidate for re-election. After a difficult first term, during which he was widely criticized for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, he was reappointed as head of the authority on 24 May.

What have been the main criticisms of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the organization he leads during the pandemic? Will the WHO succeed in reforming enough to regain the trust of its member states? Explanations in the podcast with Florence Rosier, health journalists from The world.

The episode was produced by Cyrielle Bedu, directed by Amandine Robillard and featured Morgane Tual.
