Emirates News Agency – DEWA Research and Development Center registers 5th patent

DUBAI, 19 June 2022 (WAM) – The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority Research and Development Center (DEWA R&D Center) has filed a new patent that complements the previous four patents filed by the R&D Center.

The Center has filed a patent for a redox flow battery pack with improved electrolyte distribution, in which the battery pile has a streamlined shape by resizing the cells at the inlet and outlet sections. This reduces pressure drop, improves the performance and efficiency of the battery flow system, resulting in increased power density and reduced production costs.

The new patent solves a major problem in the field of flow batteries. In conventional stacking of redox flow batteries, there are inactive areas at the edges of the cell that limit the transport of reagent mass to the electrode / electrolyte surface, resulting in pressure drops that affect the efficiency and overall performance of the flowing battery system.

DEWA CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said he is proud of this scientific achievement, which complements DEWA’s achievements and excellence, and supports its efforts to enrich the local and global scientific community.

Mr Alayer added that this achievement was in line with DEWA’s strategy for security and sustainability of energy supply, which involves adopting the latest technologies and implementing a number of energy storage projects.

“In line with the vision and direction of the Vice President, Prime Minister and King of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktum, we are nurturing talent and providing a positive and interactive environment that encourages staff to unleash their potential and helps researchers innovate. and to create and present more scientific articles and innovations. This will help make the UAE the world’s leading nation by 2071. The National Innovation Strategy aims to make the UAE one of the most innovative countries in the world, and the Dubai Innovation Strategy aims to make Dubai the most innovative city in the world. We strive to increase the efficiency of individuals and businesses in line with international best practice, enabling us to keep up with rapid change and effectively contribute to shaping and anticipating the future. We strive to innovate. “and the latest technology to strengthen DEWA ‘s excellence and leadership as one of the best utilities in the world,” said Al Tayer.

“The patents filed by DEWA reflect our commitment to the highest levels of management and excellence to promote the localization of knowledge and the participation of the scientific community in specialized research for the development of the energy sector. Clean and renewable. This is the result of DEWA’s outstanding workforce and is currently working on a number of research projects and patents. The R&D Center takes an approach based on improving the services provided by DEWA to its customers by developing the latest sustainable energy and water technologies and solutions, as well as applying applied research to ensure our continued leadership. in the world, ”continues Al Tayer.

“Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktum Solar Park ‘s research and development center employs 44 researchers, 26 of whom have doctoral or master’ s degrees. Since then, the center has published 84 scientific articles in scientific conferences and peer – reviewed journals around the world,” he said. Valid bin Salman, CEO of DEWA Business Development and Excellence.

DEWA is implementing several energy storage projects. In particular, it uses concentrated solar energy (CSB) in phase 4 of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park, which combines CSB and photovoltaic solar panels with a production capacity of 950 MW. The project will have the world’s largest total heat storage capacity of 15 hours, which will facilitate the availability of 24 hours of energy.
