The transition will be made by young people

The theory U Author Otto Scharmer’s goal is a systemic and complex approach to the world. One of the dimensions of its theory of change lies in the recommendation to include three main variables in all projects:

  • “the next generation”,
  • “excluded” and
  • “Planet”.

Regardless of the nature of the project and its deviation, the criteria of the funding plan, the definitions of the specifications, the diagnoses to be made, the educational approaches to it, Otto Scharmer invites us to integrate these three elements into our thoughts.

Implementing them fundamentally changes the way we think and makes the world happen. In terms of pedagogy, this meeting with young people creates an understanding of the future. Everything happens as if the “young people” instinctively felt the winds of the world and gave direction to follow.

Perhaps this moment in life, when they grow up and discover what surrounds and shape them, becomes a privileged moment when they capture what is happening more than others. Genetic, hormonal and social alchemy would make them feel differently than adults who are already full of experience and confidence.

If the transition comes from the “new”, then the question is, what do they believe? What is their view of the world?

For the sake of language, I will speak of ‘young people’, while acknowledging that such an overarching term is manifestly false and misleading, as it refers to the different realities of people under the age of 30 and has little in common depending on the difference in wealth, living environment (city / fields), language skills and national social codes.

The subject is less sociological knowledge and the search for more openness between these ‘young people’ and the business leaders who are trying to understand them. It should be noted that both young people and managers have survived the Covid crisis more or less comfortably. Everyone, regardless of their age, was challenged about what made sense in their lives, how they lived in the world, and what the company was for.

A survey in Canada, which could be replicated in many Western countries, revealed fragility of young people in terms of habitats and resources. If they were not the only ones affected, their living conditions, resources, health and lifestyle were affected to such an extent that commentators spoke of the “victim generation”. Even more than their individual situations, the issue of ecological transition is at the forefront of their concerns.

Particularly educational investigation carried out MEDEF in 2021 The association representing the French leaders points out that it is more sensitive to ecological transition issues than the rest of the sample surveyed. Almost systematically, both young people and business leaders agree on an understanding of the problems. But the youngest (here under the age of 35) are very attracted to the economic downturn. A 2021 CSA (Consumer Science & Analytics) survey France confirms this ecological transition tropism. “In order to get an equivalent offer, 78% of employees would like to join a company that is committed to greening.” Young people are once again in the first place in this matter.

Group APME3 (joint ventures) decided to invest in building a future solution that is more friendly to people and the climate by organizing a seminar with half young people and half leaders.

The initiative comes from a solid core of leaders who are eager to re-establish dialogue with young people who do not seem to trust grand speeches, promises and public speeches. These leaders are inspired by new practices consisting of involve young people in strategic committees as the restaurant chain Signorizza does.
