Narinder Batra resigns as President of the Indian Olympic Association

Narinder Batra resigned as president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday. Batra, who is also the head of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), was elected president of the IOA in 2017. Batra said in a statement that he thought his role as head of the FIH required more attention and therefore resigned as president of the IOA. .

“At a time when world hockey is going through an important phase of development, with the promotion of Hockey5s, the creation of a new competition this year – the FIH Hockey Nations Cup – and the launch of platforms and activities that attract fans, my role as President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) needs to all these activities more time, “Batra said in a statement.

“I feel that the time has come for me to leave this role to someone who will come up with a fresh mind and new ideas on how to move Indian sport to much greater heights and also to go full time to work for the 2036 Summer Olympics in India. it is a privilege and a huge honor to serve as President of the IOA during my tenure, I was guided by a single goal: the well-being and improvement of Indian sport, ”Batra said in a statement.

“At this stage, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in the last 4 years. And I wish my successor and the whole sports family in India every success in the future!” added.

Batr’s resignation comes a month after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a preliminary investigation against him in a case involving alleged misuse of Hockey India funds. Batra is accused of using Hockey India funds for personal gain.

Batra took part in a tense battle with Hockey India earlier this year. Batra has reportedly questioned the Indian hockey team’s performance in some tournaments that have taken place in the recent past.

Who is Narinder Batra?

Born in Jammu and Kashmir, Batra was a hockey player during his youth and played for his state team at the domestic level. Batra joined Hockey India in 2009 after the body was created following the dissolution of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF). Batra joined the organization as treasurer and soon became its general secretary. Until 2014, when he was elected president, he served as Secretary General of Hockey India. Batra also served as treasurer of the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) from 2010 to 2013. In 2017, he was elected President of the IOA.
