Doha: Approximately 1.2 million tickets were sold for this year’s World Championships in Qatar, organizers said on Wednesday, announcing the sale for the first time.

Lead organizer Hassan Al-Thawadi said there was “record” demand for the November to December World Cups, which took place for the first time in the Middle East.

“I think about 1.2 million tickets have already been bought,” he told the Qatar Economic Forum.

“So people are really shopping and people are excited to come there. There’s no doubt about that.”

This number was confirmed by representatives of the organizing committee, who stated that there were about 40 million applications in two sales phases.

The Qatar capital Doha, with a population of around 2.4 million, is preparing for a huge influx of visitors and hotel accommodation is extremely scarce.

Some fans will stay in 1000 traditional Qatari tents, others will sleep on cruise ships moored in Doha.
