Tokyo’s $ 1.4 billion state stadium, built by the Japanese government for last year’s Olympics, is considered the venue for the World Athletics Championships.

The World Athletics Inspection Group – the governing body of the sport – met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on Wednesday and is scheduled to visit the stadium on Thursday.

Eugene, Oregon is the venue for the next World Cup in July, which has been postponed to 2021 to allow for the Olympics. Budapest in Hungary is scheduled for 2023.

Venues for 2025 and 2027 have not yet been determined, and interest has been expressed by Tokyo, Nairobi, Kenya and Australia.

Tokyo should be considered a favorite.

Sebastian Coe, head of world athletics, said in Japan last year that he hoped the championship would bring him to the city. It is not known if Coe will be in Tokyo this time. Many World Athletics sponsorship contracts are run through Dentsu Inc., a giant Japanese advertising and public relations firm.

Three of the four best sponsors of World Athletics are companies based in Japan: athletic clothing manufacturer Asics, watchmaker Seiko and Japanese electronics company TDK. The other is the National Bank of Qatar.

Dentsu has been a major driver in raising more than $ 3 billion in local sponsorship for the Tokyo Olympics and is a strong player in Japanese business, politics and the media. Much of Dentsu’s influence is in sports marketing and resolving broadcasting rights issues.

In 1991, the World Cup was held in Tokyo, and in 2007, Osaka was the venue.

Coe, a two-time winner of the 1,500-meter Olympic gold medal and a former member of the British Parliament, is a powerful player in his own right and is considered a possible successor to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. Bach’s term expires in 2025.

The Japanese city of Sapporo is also among the favorites to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. It competes with Salt Lake City and Vancouver.

The IOC is expected to name the venue of the Winter Olympics in May 2023 at meetings in Mumbai, India. He could also award a double prize and name the host city in 2034.
