Ukraine ‘s secret service has said it has arrested Putin’ s main ally World news

(Reuters) – Ukraine’s security services on Tuesday said they had arrested pro-Russian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, Ukraine’s closest and most influential ally in Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously published a photograph of a tired, handcuffed Medvedchuk saying Putin was the godfather of his daughter.

In February, Kyiv announced that the leader of the Party Opposition Platform – For Life Medvedchuk has escaped house arrest. Last year, the authorities launched a state treason case against Medvedchuk, who denies any wrongdoing.

“You can be a pro-Russian politician and work for an aggressive state for years. You may have been hiding from the truth lately. You can even wear a Ukrainian military uniform for camouflage,” the security service said in an online statement.

“But will it help you avoid punishment? Not at all! You are waiting for shackles, and the same goes for traitors in Ukraine like you.”

The report said Ivan Bakanov, head of the secret services, said his staff had “carried out a lightning fast and dangerous multi-level special operation” to detain Medvedchuk, but did not provide further details.

Last month, Zelensky announced the suspension of the Opposition Platform – For Life, Ukraine’s largest opposition movement, and several other smaller political parties with Russia.

Medvedchuk’s representative was not immediately available for comment.
